Contextualising the development of managing of Others

There are two types of employees promoted to become first-time managers: the ROOKIE and the more SEASONED EMPLOYEE. The ROOKIE has no or limited understanding and experience in the basics of leading and managing others and in general, falls into one of the following two categories:

  • High performing employees who get promoted into a leadership passage based on the assumption that because they are good at their job they should be good at the next level (manager of others). These employees are often reluctant to change and want to keep doing the things that made them successful.
  • Employees placed in a leadership position based on legislative requirements (BBBEE, etc.) These employees are often thrown into the deep end with the expectation that they will eventually acquire the necessary competencies either through coaching from their supervisor or learning as they go along

Develop self mastery as a platform for actualising own potential. (3 or 5 days)

The more SEASONED EMPLOYEE has some exposure to leading a group of people; either in a relieving capacity or project based, or is currently managing the performance of others but still lacks the deeper emotional competencies of leading and managing people.

To this end, a developmental path for first time leaders with TWO ENTRY POINTS is proposed. The purpose of this approach is to maximise their chances of becoming a successful Manager of Others based on practical, measurable approaches which will give them direction and confidence in the challenges which they face in making the turn.
